United Airlines Holdings Inc announced on Thursday its intention to invest $15 million in Eve Air Mobility, a subsidiary of Brazilian aerospace company Embraer. The major U.S. carrier also revealed that it will order 200 aircraft from the air taxi maker. An option for an additional order of 200 aircraft will be included in the investment deal.
Eve Air is focused on designing four-seater air taxis which are categorized as electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL). The air travel company is marketing its taxis as an alternative form of transport for city dwellers which will not only provide efficient transport but also relieve traffic congestion in heavily populated urban areas.
While still seeking clearance to transport passengers, Eve Air is looking to attract interest from major airlines as a means of boosting its company profile. Eve Air’s first air taxi, which has a range of 60 miles, is expected to be completed by 2026.
Innovation aside, United Airlines explained that a major reason for the decision to invest in Eve Air is because its parent company Embraer can provide access to parts and services. This is United Airlines’ second foray in the air taxi market, having previously placed a $10 million deposit for 100 eVTOLs with Archer Aviation Inc.
