The Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday that the Gulf Arab nation will seek to eliminate carbon emissions by 2060. This will result in Saudi Arabia more than doubling its annual target for reducing net carbon emissions.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aims to reach zero-net emissions by 2060 under its circular carbon economy program… while maintaining the kingdom’s leading role in strengthening security and stability of global oil markets,” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told reporters.

These remarks came at the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), a green conference that occurs just one month prior to the United Nations’ COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow at the end of the month. The aim of this year’s COP26 conference is to decrease emissions in an effort to confront the ongoing climate change crisis.

In addition to these events, there will be a wider Middle East green summit taking place in the Saudi Arabian city of Riyadh on Monday morning. Saudi Arabia committed in March to ensure that 50% of the country’s energy will be generated from renewable energy sources by 2030.
