Electric vehicle startup Rivian has announced its decision to open a service support operations facility in Plymouth, Michigan, as deliveries for the company’s launch edition of the R1T pickup are expected to begin later in the month. This comes after the Midwestern automaker decided to launch its initial public offering.
According to the company, the new facility will cost $4.6 million to develop and is expected to employ over 100 people once operation commences. The facility will be in close proximity to Rivian’s headquarters, which is also located in the Michigan city of Plymouth. Currently, the company’s factory is in Normal. Illinois. Rivian also opened an R&D center in Dearborn in 2015—an investment that cost $29.5 million.
Ririvan revealed in a press release that the new service center will be used to provide “around-the-clock assistance by the Rivian Roadside and Service Support team to North American Rivian owners with vehicle questions, roadside requests, and service scheduling needs.” According to TechCrunch, one Rivian spokesperson revealed that the service center will cater to the needs of all Rivian clients, both new and existing.
