Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Co Ltd currently finds itself at the forefront of electric sedan monthly sales, despite suffering an 11% drop in year-over-year sales of total electric cars. According to CNBC, the Warren Buffett-backed EV manufacturer sold 130,970 units of its vehicles in 2020.
The reason for BYD’s strong sales performance is its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, of which 27,594 units have been sold—a stark 150% year-on-year increase. BYD’s standout model has been the Han electric sedan, of which 10,000 units were sold in the first five months of its launch in July. This excludes the month of December as sales figures for this month have not yet been disclosed.
While BYD remains on top of the competition, some of its fiercest rivals are closing in on its success. The Shanghai-based Nio is hanging onto BYD’s coattails with 43,728 unit sales in 2020 and 7,000 sales in December alone.
Xpeng, the Guangzhou-based EV maker sold 27,041 units this year; a 112% YoY growth. In the fourth quarter alone, Xpeng recorded a 303% growth, resulting in a 51% rise in sales from the previous year.
