With unfavorable flight weather and staff shortages persisting, American Airlines announced that it canceled 262 additional flights for the day. This comes after the airline canceled close to 2,000 flights over Friday and the weekend.
The lack of improvement in the situation comes as a surprise to American Airlines, especially since the company expressed hope that the return of almost 1,800 to work on Monday would help to make a turnaround. Company spokeswoman Sarah Jantz explained, however, that improvement in the situation is still expected to occur shortly.
“We expect considerable improvement beginning today with some residual impact from the weekend,” Jantz confirmed in a public statement.
In addition to severe staff shortages over the weekend, flight operations were also severly impacted by severe winds at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, home of the headquarters of the airline.
American Airlines are not alone in their current predicament, however. Close competitors such as Southwest Airlines Co and Spirit Airlines Inc also canceled a large volume of flights due to unfavorable weather conditions.
With the holiday season fast approaching, American Airlines is determined to expand its workforce, looking to employ both flight attendants and pilots.
