Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet confirmed on Thursday that they will be resuming the service of their Boeing 737 MAX jets in their fleet after the aircrafts were grounded for approximately two years.

With the service of Boeing 737 MAX jets halted internationally due to safety concerns, SpiceJet has entered into an agreement with lessor Avolon for the leasing of this model.

One-hundred seventy-five countries have allowed for the return of the 737 MAX to service, with 30 airlines already resuming flights with these airplanes. While SpiceJet intends to follow suit, the airline has confirmed that the resumption of its flights using the MAX jets is still subject to regulatory approvals from the country’s air safety regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Likhita Chepa, senior research analyst at CapitalVia Global Research, mentioned how the 737 MAX will play a vital role in helping SpiceJet to handle an uptick in flights. “With easing of the travel restrictions and increasing pace of vaccinations, there might be some pick-up in air traffic and SpiceJet’s settlement to restart MAX aircraft could help it to get back on track.”

India’s second-largest airline by market share, SpiceJet is the only carrier in the country to operate Boeing 737 MAX jets. Because 13 737 jets have been grounded during this time, the airline is looking to receive compensation from Boeing for the losses it has suffered
