Walmart Inc is currently engaged in discussions regarding the possibility of the retail giant promoting and distributing smart TV sets that run on Comcast software, the Wall Street Journal revealed on Tuesday.
The terms being discussed include the retail giant promoting the Comcast-run TVs in exchange for a share in the profits generated by Comcast for the sale of said TV sets. It is likely, however, that a third party would physically manufacture the television sets.
When asked about the potential deal, Walmart’s vice-president of electronics, Ryan Peterson, explained that the company is in constant talks with various suppliers regarding the manufacturing of new innovations, yet declined to shed light on the details of talks between Walmart and Comcast.
Should an agreement in fact be reached between the two corporations, it will not be the first time that Walmart and Comcast have engaged in business. Walmart sold its video-on-demand service, Vudu, to the Comcast-owned movie ticketing service Fandango Media earlier this year.
This deal would also see Comcast enter into a highly saturated and competitive market, with the likes of Amazon, Roku, and Apple racing to capture a shared target audience.
