Big box retailer Target Corp announced on Thursday that it will be hiring 100,000 seasonal workers ahead of the busy holiday season in the final quarter of the year.
In the face of slowing economic activity, the US retailer made the decision to begin its festive deal earlier than usual, thereby accelerating the demand for temporary workers for the holiday season. The company views this period as a critical shopping period in which to compensate for potentially slowing sales in tight economic conditions.
Target’s first phase of festive deals is set to run from October 6 to October 8. According to analysts, such sales periods are expected to entice sales, especially as shoppers seek discounted prices during the tougher economic climate. The retailers hiring target matches the 100,000 workers that were hired during last year’s festive season when a major labor shortage was underway.
Previous companies that have decided to recruit an influx of seasonal workers include Target’s close rival Walmart, which announced on Wednesday its intention to hire a combined 40,000 workers in both seasonal and full-time roles. The company stated a year back that it would look to hire 150,000 workers in a full-time capacity.
