A sheriff’s office in Oregon has introduced a new way for residents to report unsafe e-bike and e-scooter riding, as local officials respond to growing concerns about reckless behavior on streets and in neighborhoods.
According to the report, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office updated its online traffic complaint form with a category focused specifically on e-bike and e-scooter activity. Deputies said the change follows a rise in dangerous riding, especially among younger riders during the summer. Complaints have included riders moving through traffic, speeding, doing wheelies in roadways, and in some cases throwing objects at vehicles.
The office said the form is meant to do more than collect complaints. By asking residents to include details such as location, time, descriptions, and photos when available, deputies hope to spot patterns and determine where education efforts or targeted enforcement may be most useful. Officials said the idea had been under discussion for months as concerns continued to build.
The sheriff’s office also stressed that the online form is for non-emergency reports only. Situations that require immediate police response should still be reported by calling 911. The move comes as other jurisdictions look for ways to address unsafe riding without limiting responsible riders who use e-bikes and scooters legally.
