New Star Wars art book highlights how Andor made franchise history with an everyday prop

A new Star Wars art book is drawing attention to an unusual piece of franchise history tied to Andor: the series appears to be the first Star Wars production to feature a working toilet. The detail comes from The Art of Andor, which looks back at the design choices behind the Disney Plus show that ran from 2022 to 2025.

According to the book, the production team aimed to build as many props as possible by hand rather than depend heavily on visual effects. That approach extended to everyday background items throughout the series, including food packaging and household objects. One of the most notable examples surfaced in the first season, when an episode set on Niamos showed Cassian Andor in a hotel bathroom that included a sink, shower and toilet combination.

A discreet design choice

Rebecca Alleway, the show’s set decorator, said in the companion book that the team wanted to preserve what Star Wars represents while still giving each location its own character. She also said she designed the toilet as part of a shower bathroom and kept it so subtle that viewers would not immediately notice it. The source notes that toilets have been mentioned elsewhere in Star Wars material, and similar bathroom-like fixtures have appeared in other projects, but Andor was the first to show a clearly recognizable working toilet in an ordinary setting.

The book frames the detail as a small but memorable milestone for the franchise. It may not be the most dramatic first in Star Wars history, but it adds another example of how Andor used grounded production design to set itself apart from other entries in the saga.
