In an attempt to tap into the lucrative electric vehicle market, automotive giant General Motors has increased its efforts to release a new line of electric vehicles, ranging from delivery vans to luxury vehicles.
Mary Barra, GM’s chief executive officer, explained in a statement on Tuesday that global EV market penetration currently stands at around 3%. She then revealed her company’s desire to change that.
Included in GM’s future EV plans are developments such as two futuristic Cadillac models, a battery-powered Chevrolet pickup truck, and an electric Hummer which is expected to go on sale later in the year.
One of the automaker’s largest EV projects is the establishment of a wholly GM-owned company called BrightDrop, which supplies electric delivery vans and fleet management services. Upcoming operations include the sale of electric pallet movers as well as the release of an electric cargo van later this year. Just one of this company’s notable clients is the multinational delivery services company, FedEx Corp.
“We believe in an all-electric future, and we think it will take more than electrification of our consumer vehicles to get there,” explained Pam Fletcher, the Chief Innovation Officer of BrightDrop.
