BMW’s new i3 Touring has been seen on the road for the first time, giving the clearest look yet at the wagon version of the electric sedan that launched only last month. The prototype is still heavily camouflaged, but its extended rear section and roofline make it obvious that BMW is preparing a more practical body style for the i3 family.
The standard i3 arrived in June as BMW’s second Neue Klasse model after the iX3 SUV. In Germany, the i3 50 xDrive First Edition starts at €75,340, while the standard version is listed at €65,900. In the UK, the First Edition begins at £57,905, and BMW says the regular model will go on sale this autumn from £53,005. The company has also indicated that at least one additional variant is coming.
What the Touring version is expected to bring
Although the Touring body has only just been spotted, the front end is expected to stay close to the sedan’s design, including BMW’s new twin headlights, kidney grille, and updated emblem. Inside, the wagon should carry over the Neue Klasse cabin layout, centered around a 17.9-inch floating infotainment screen and a 43-inch Panoramic Vision display stretching across the base of the windshield.
Under the skin, the i3 50 xDrive uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system and a 108.7 kWh battery. BMW says the sedan can travel up to 566 miles under WLTP testing, or about 440 miles on the EPA cycle, and it can recover nearly 250 miles of range in roughly 10 minutes using DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. The Touring should offer more cargo and passenger room, but it is also expected to give up some range and likely cost a bit more than the sedan.
BMW plans to start i3 production at its Munich plant this summer, with deliveries still targeted for this fall. In the US, the 2027 BMW i3 will come with a native NACS charging port. More details on the Touring version are expected soon.
