Amazon.com Inc revealed on Monday its plan to open two new distribution centers in Italy during the course of this year. The world’s largest retailer will be injecting over $278 million into this expansion.

One distribution center will be located in the north-western city of Novara, while the other, which will be known as a fulfillment center, will be located near the city of Modena. Amazon is expected to generate approximately 1,100 new jobs as part of its expansion efforts.

Currently, the eCommerce giant employs over 8,500 people in Italy. Since initially beginning operations in Italy over 10 years ago, Amazon has invested over $5.8 billion in the country.

The online retail group explained in a statement that its expansion in Italy is being done as a result of an increase in customer demand in the region. By establishing two new distribution centers in the region, Amazon will be able to better collaborate with local small and medium suppliers as well as provide customers with a wider array of products and quicker delivery times.

News of Amazon’s Italian expansion comes just weeks after the group’s expansion efforts in San Antonio, Texas, where two new fulfillment centers and a delivery station were constructed.
