Kia has introduced the Syros EV in India, opening pre-orders for a compact electric SUV that will sit at the bottom of the brand’s EV lineup in that market. The model is based on the same K1 platform as its gasoline counterpart and keeps a similar design, but swaps in an all-electric drivetrain. It is scheduled to go on sale later this month.
The Syros EV will be offered with two battery packs: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. According to the report, the larger battery version is rated at up to 326 miles, or 526 km, on the ARAI MIDC cycle, while the smaller pack is rated at 275 miles, or 443 km. Kia says the 51.4 kWh version can charge from 10% to 80% in 39 minutes, which it describes as best in class. Power output varies by battery size, with the larger pack paired to a 168 hp motor and the smaller one to a 132 hp motor.
Feature-rich cabin, but limited market reach
Inside, the Syros EV gets Kia’s 30-inch wide panoramic display setup, combining twin 12.3-inch screens with a 5-inch climate display. Other equipment includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging, ambient lighting, and more than 95 connected functions through Kia Connect, including remote battery preconditioning, scheduled charging, and a digital key.
The SUV measures 3,995 mm long, 1,805 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, with a 2,550 mm wheelbase, placing it close in size to Kia’s EV2 sold in Europe. However, because the Syros EV is being built locally for India, it will not be sold in the US or Europe. Instead, those markets are expected to get the EV2, while the US is also set to receive the EV3 later this year. Kia currently offers the EV6, Niro EV, and EV9 in the US, and the upcoming EV3 is expected to start below $35,000, making it one of the more affordable EVs in that market.
