US and Iran intensify strikes as Gulf tensions spread into neighboring states

The US military said it struck targets in Iran for a seventh consecutive night after President Donald Trump said the temporary ceasefire was no longer in effect. According to Centcom, the latest operation hit surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and maritime capabilities. It said fighter jets, drones and warships were used, and that the strikes ended at 21:30 ET.

Iran responded by saying it had targeted US allies in the region, including Kuwait, where officials reported damage to a power and water facility and later said an oil site had been significantly damaged, with some injuries reported. Jordan said it intercepted 10 Iranian missiles overnight without damage, while Bahrain said its air defences stopped Iranian attacks. The US denied Iran’s claim that it had struck civilian infrastructure in Iran, saying its operations were limited to military targets.

Strikes, shipping disruption and wider regional fallout

Explosions were reported in several Iranian locations, including Yazd, Qeshm island and Bandar Abbas near the Strait of Hormuz. BBC Persian also verified damage near the Shahid Mirzaei tunnels, and local authorities said attacks on electricity and desalination facilities near Jask left about 10,000 people in 20 villages without drinking water. More than 100 telecommunications masts have also been knocked out in northern Hormozgan province, disrupting phone and internet services.

The confrontation has also affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran says it has closed the waterway and commercial traffic has largely stopped. The route normally carries a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, raising concerns about energy supplies. The US has reimposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports, while Centcom rejected an Iranian report that two oil tankers had exploded south of the strait. Provincial authorities in Hormozgan said seven people were killed in the attacks, and the US said it destroyed a control tower in Chabahar that it described as part of an IRGC maritime surveillance network.
