Apple TV is heading into a strong year on paper, with a slate that includes returning series such as Silo and Sugar alongside new titles that range from dramedies to tech thrillers. But according to the report, the most strategically important release may be the return of Ted Lasso, which arrives after what had seemed like a final ending for the show.
The fourth season works partly as a soft reboot. Ted is back, but the setup has changed enough to make the series feel fresh. The premiere begins in Kansas City, where Ted is working part-time at a grocery store so he can spend more time with his son. Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins travel there to persuade him to coach a new women’s team, and that decision becomes the season’s opening focus before the story moves back to England.
A familiar brand with a new structure
Season 3 in 2023 closed on what looked like a clean finish for most of the cast. Ted was returning to the U.S., Roy had been promoted to head coach of AFC Richmond, Coach Beard had married at Stonehenge, and Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins were considering a women’s team. That ending gave the series the feel of a completed sitcom, which made the comeback notable in itself.
What makes the new season especially important for Apple TV is the combination of familiarity and risk. Ted and much of the coaching and club leadership are still present, but the actual team is largely new. Characters such as Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya, and Dani Rojas are absent from the episodes provided to press, aside from brief references. In their place is a younger squad and a new assistant coach, Alice, who offers a stricter contrast to Ted’s upbeat style. The move away from well-known characters is a gamble, but early episodes suggest the show is still able to deliver the tone that made it a hit, while giving Apple TV another potential flagship series in a crowded streaming market.
