After reporting unexpectedly impressive third-quarter financial results on Tuesday, enterprise software giant Salesforce.com announced that it has completed an agreement to acquire messaging platform Slack Technologies. The deal is reportedly worth $27.7 million.
With business teams seeking new ways to conduct their work in a globalized economy, Salesforce explained that this deal is expected to be transformative to both “customers and the industry.”
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff supported this view, announcing: “This is a match made in heaven. Together, Salesforce and Slack will shape the future of enterprise software and transform the way everyone works in the all-digital, work-from-anywhere world. I’m thrilled to welcome Slack to the Salesforce Ohana once the transaction closes.”
Founded in 1999, Salesforce has become one of the fastest-growing enterprise software companies across the globe. In 2020, it exceeded its financial expectations for the year, beating analysts’ revenue forecasts of $5.25 billion with a revenue of $5.42 billion.
The company’s acquisition of Slack is just the latest in a series of major deals. In 2018, Salesforce acquired Mulesoft for $6.5 billion, while in June 2019 the company acquired data visualization company Tableau Software.
