After becoming the first African country to begin a national vaccination campaign two weeks ago, Morocco is expected to receive an order of 4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Thursday. The doses that are expected to arrive were manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.
According to health ministry officials, the shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines is scheduled to arrive at the Casablanca airport on Thursday afternoon. This latest shipment comes after the North African nation received 2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine last month. In addition, the country also received 500,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Sinopharm.
“This new batch would enable a steady continuation of Morocco’s national vaccination campaign,” announced Said Afif, a member of the Moroccan health ministry’s scientific committee.
So far, the Moroccan government has ordered enough vaccine doses to fully inoculate 33 million people. The nation currently aims to vaccinate up to 80% of its population.
By the end of Wednesday, Morocco had recorded 476,689 coronavirus infections and 8,436 deaths since the start of the pandemic. The country has vaccinated 746,116 people thus far.
