Consumer staples are usually prized for consistency rather than drama, but a strong earnings season can still change the investment case. That is the backdrop for Darling Ingredients and Newell Brands, two companies that recently posted quarterly results strong enough to support better earnings outlooks. According to the report, both stocks now carry a Zacks Rank #1, or Strong Buy, after favorable estimate revisions followed their latest updates.
Darling Ingredients stood out with a sharp improvement in profitability in the second quarter. The company reported adjusted net income of $387.3 million, up from $12.7 million in the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings reached $2.41 per share, well above the $1.45 consensus estimate and far ahead of the prior year’s $0.09 per share. Adjusted EBITDA nearly tripled to $741.7 million, helped by better margins, stronger pricing, and a solid contribution from Diamond Green Diesel, the 50/50 joint venture with Valero Energy. Sales also rose 16% to $1.72 billion, even though revenue came in slightly below expectations.
The company also highlighted balance sheet progress and shareholder returns, including a $223 million reduction in net debt, $73 million in share repurchases, and $280 million in cash distributions from Diamond Green Diesel. Management expects third-quarter core ingredients adjusted EBITDA to land between $325 million and $340 million while continuing to work toward lower leverage. For investors looking at defensive holdings, that combination of stronger operations and capital discipline may be notable.
Newell Brands also reported a quarter that drew attention from analysts, although the source focuses more on the broader investment implication than on detailed figures. The key point is that both companies delivered results that improved sentiment and supported higher earnings expectations. In a market that may be vulnerable to excess optimism, consumer staples names with better fundamentals and rising revisions can offer a steadier path for portfolios seeking resilience.
