Sporting apparel giant Nike unveiled its first-ever sustainable basketball shoe on Wednesday, called Cosmic Unity. This is part of the company’s Move to Zero campaign, which aims to realize a zero-waste and zero-carbon future.
While composed of at least 25% recycled content, Cosmic Unity lead designer Ross Klein reassured consumers that this shoe was still manufactured with performance as a priority.
This first-of-its-kind basketball shoe features an upper cabling technology that mimics cosmic frequencies. This, together with the Nike “Crater Foam”, provides dynamic support and cushioning while ensuring maximum responsiveness.
WNBA 2020 MVP A’ja Wilson is one star athlete that has shown an interest in this groundbreaking creation. The Las Vegas Aces forward explained: “When I first saw it, I loved how different it looked from any other basketball shoe. And then when you dive into really what it’s made of and everything else, how it’s good for our environment and our world, I think that’s what really stuck out to me … It’s lightweight. It’s of course going to be durable. That just checks all the marks for me.”
Another basketball star who has chosen to sport the Cosmic Unity is NBA All-Star and Los Angeles Lakers power forward Anthony Davis, who debuted the shoes during his team’s single-point victory over the Boston Celtics.
