Sen. Lindsey Graham dies after brief illness, office says

Sen. Lindsey Graham has died after what his office described as a brief and sudden illness, according to a statement posted Sunday. He was 71.

Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, had just returned from a trip to Ukraine, a spokeswoman told MS NOW. She said no further details were available immediately and that more information would be shared in the coming days. His office asked for privacy for his family during what it called an incredibly difficult time.

Long career in Congress and the military

Graham was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and won reelection in 2008, 2014 and 2020. Before that, he served in the House of Representatives after being elected in 1994. His Senate website described him as a conservative problem-solver and a strong supporter of national defense.

Prior to his congressional career, Graham served in the U.S. Air Force for more than three decades, including active duty as an Air Force lawyer and later service in the reserves. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2015 at the rank of colonel. Born in Central, South Carolina, he was the first in his family to attend college and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina.
