Taiwanese company Pou Chen Corp halted operations at its plant in the Vietnamese capital of Ho Chih Minh City last wek as a result of COVID-19 concerns. The factory, which produces footwear for Nike and Adidas, took the decision as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in Vietnam’s business hub.

Vietnam’s health ministry revealed in a statement that production at Pou Chen’s Pouyuen Vietnam factory would be suspended for a total of ten days. This decision comes after 49 COVID-19 cases were detected at the factory during a time when coronavirus cases in Vietnam are at an all-time high.

Due to an extreme spike in cases in the northern provinces of Vietnam, suppliers for companies such as Apple, Samsung Electronics, and other major tech companies have been forced into temporary closure.

With over 56,000 workers, Pouyuen Vietnam is the largest employer in Ho Chih Minh. The plant was forced to close after its attempt to arrange for workers to sleep at the site in order to keep the facility open proved unsuccessful. This is the second time that the factory has been shut down, the first time coming after the plant failed to observe social distancing rules. The first closure took effect for two working days.
